The Return of the Whooping Cranes: A Port Aransas Winter Tradition

Michele Lorette January 26, 2026

Every year, one of the most extraordinary wildlife events in North America unfolds right here on the Texas Gulf Coast. As temperatures drop and coastal breezes shift, the endangered whooping cranes make their long migration from Canada back to their winter home—the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding bays near Port Aransas.

A Symbol of Resilience

Whooping cranes are one of the rarest birds in the world. In the 1940s, their population dwindled to just 15 birds. Thanks to decades of conservation efforts, their numbers have slowly rebounded, and today Texas welcomes hundreds of cranes each winter.

Their arrival is more than just a migration. It’s a story of hope, preservation, and the power of wild places like Port Aransas.

Why They Choose Port Aransas

Port Aransas and the surrounding coastal region offer the perfect winter habitat. The cranes settle into the marshes, tidal flats, and quiet inlets around:

  • Aransas National Wildlife Refuge
  • San Jose Island
  • St. Charles Bay
  • Mustang Island shoreline
  • Wildlife-rich areas accessible by boat tours from Port A
Here, the cranes feed on blue crabs, clams, small fish, and nutritious marsh vegetation, giving them the strength they need before their spring migration north.

Visit Port A's Whooping Crane Festival

Each year since 1996, the Whooping Crane Festival has celebrated the annual return of the cranes to their wintering habitat at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. The Texas Coastal Bend is the only place where you can see the world’s last naturally occurring population of Whooping Cranes. See you February 19–22, 2026!
