Water Supply in Port Aransas: What Buyers & Homeowners Need to Know

Michele Lorette July 14, 2026

One of the questions I'm hearing more often from buyers is, "Should I be concerned about the water supply in Port Aransas?"

Like much of Texas, the Coastal Bend has experienced periods of drought over the past several years. When rainfall is limited and our region continues to grow, water naturally becomes a topic of conversation. Fortunately, our local and regional leaders have been working hard to stay ahead of the issue rather than waiting until it becomes a crisis.

What Is Port Aransas Doing to Secure Its Water Supply?

I've attended the Water Department meetings and followed many of the discussions surrounding our water supply because I believe it's important to understand what's happening and to be able to answer my clients' questions with facts, not fear. It's also encouraging to see the work being done behind the scenes. Port Aransas’ water department and local leaders continue working closely with the City of Corpus Christi and regional water authorities to secure additional long-term water supplies.

Efforts include expanding water conservation programs, improving infrastructure, exploring groundwater options, and advancing desalination projects that would provide a drought-resistant source of drinking water for the Coastal Bend. These aren't quick fixes, but they are proactive investments designed to support both our residents and the continued growth of our coastal communities for years to come.

Current Water Restrictions in Port Aransas

Today, Port Aransas continues to have a dependable water supply. During particularly dry periods, residents may see temporary water conservation measures, such as limiting lawn watering or washing boats and vehicles. These are common throughout many Texas communities and are designed to help protect our water resources until reservoir levels recover.

The Future of Water in Port Aransas

Looking ahead, one of the biggest conversations is desalination. Because we're located on the Gulf Coast, desalination offers an exciting opportunity to create a more reliable, drought-resistant water source for the Coastal Bend. While these projects take time to plan and build, they represent an investment in the future of our community.

What Buyers Should Know About Water Supply in Port Aransas

As a Realtor, I don't see buyers walking away from Port Aransas because of water concerns. Instead, they're asking thoughtful questions, and they appreciate knowing that our community is actively planning for the future. Buyers today are just as interested in insurance costs, vacation rental potential, flood zones, and property values as they are in the long-term availability of water.

I've lived in Port Aransas since 2004, and I've watched this community continue to grow while preserving the small-town coastal lifestyle that makes it so special. Like every growing coastal community, we'll continue to face challenges, but I've also seen firsthand how committed our local leaders are to finding long-term solutions.

Whether you're looking for a vacation home, investment property, or a place to call home, I believe it's important to understand both the opportunities and the challenges of our market. My goal is always to provide honest information so you can make confident decisions.
