Why Port Aransas Is Called The Fishing Capital Of Texas

Michele Lorette June 2, 2026

Known for legendary offshore adventures, world-class bay fishing, and a rich coastal heritage, Port Aransas officially earned the title “Fishing Capital of Texas” in 2025 when Governor Greg Abbott signed HCR 117 into law.

Located on Mustang Island along the Texas Gulf Coast, Port Aransas has long been a destination where anglers chase everything from redfish and speckled trout to tuna, marlin, mahi-mahi, and red snapper. With direct access to the Gulf of Mexico, expansive bay systems, jetties, piers, and deep-sea fishing grounds, Port A offers year-round opportunities for fishermen of every skill level.

Fishing is more than recreation in Port Aransas. It is part of the town’s identity and history. Originally known as “Tarpon” in the late 1800s because of its abundant tarpon fishing, the community grew around the Gulf’s thriving sportfishing and commercial fishing industries. Today, generations of captains, guides, and visitors continue that tradition on the water every day.

Whether it’s casting from the jetties at sunrise, heading offshore for trophy fish, or watching boats unload at the marina, life in Port Aransas revolves around the water. That authentic coastal lifestyle, combined with 18 miles of beaches and a laid-back atmosphere, makes Port A one of Texas’ most iconic beach towns.

For visitors and homeowners alike, Port Aransas offers something rare: a place where fishing is not just an activity, it’s a way of life.
